It seems like rumours might be true that he has died. A truly excellent, imaginative, creative and virtuosic guitarist and a favourite of mine since I first heard him on the powerful “Believe It” album by Tony Williams’ Lifetime.

Yes, very sad news. I grew up hearing the extraordinary lines Allan played on so many records in my brother Rob’s collection.. his was a truly unique and revolutionary voice on the guitar…

Devastating news. Worsened by the fact that Allan was virtually penniless. There’s a group funding account linked off Facebook if anyone wants to donate for funeral/memorial expenses.

    Absolutely gutted.

Gary Husband posted a very touching (and extremely honest) piece on FB about the news.

The musical world lost a true visionary and someone who epitomised progressive musicianship – a very unique individual.

Unfortunately, not much news has covered it. It is a real shame, because I personally believe his impact on music was massive, and his legacy will live on for many generations to come.

If you truly care about this – please pledge towards his memorial – https://www.gofundme.com/allanholdsworthmemorial

    Thanks – Terry

Very moving piece by Gary H, and there’s a nice half-page obituary by John Fordham in today’s Guardian.

Nice to see that the memorial fund (now closed) hugely exceeded what was asked. He was worth every penny.

A lovely find on YouTube – Gary Husband, Paul Carmichael and Allan, on Gary’s “Improvisation & Interplay” video…

I was very saddened to hear of the death of Allan. As RT says, a genius. I only got to see Allan playing live three times, over a period of about 30 years. Once with Chad Wakermann on tubs and twice with Gary Husband. These were three of the most amazing gigs I’ve ever been to. He has left us with the most fantastic musical legacy.
